The allegorical figure of Fortitude is represented here by the angel holding a column in the center foreground of this image. "Fortitude" is from the series of "Seven Virtues" in which Bruegel depicts all the virues as allegorical women with traditional attributes at the center of each scene. The representations of good works appear in a naturalistic, secular context. The iconography in these images is likely derived from 15th and 16th century Netherlandish proverbs. Along with "The Seven Virtues" Bruegel completed a more fantastic and grotesque series called "The Seven Vices" which highlights the artist’s lively imagination and wicked sense of humor.
