According to the King James Version of the Bible (Mark xv:45-46) Joseph of Arimathaea pleaded with Pilate for possession of Christ’s body. Upon Pilate’s approval Joseph bought fine linen, wrapped the body in it and laid Christ in a sepulcher hewn out of rock. St.John appears at the lower right watching Christ’s body being lifted as he rests a consoling hand on the shoulder of the grief-stricken Virgin Mary. According to Wölfflin, in the North, the scene of Christ’s Deposition was much favored over the Lamentation.
