Original etching and softground printed in brown ink on heavy wove paper with full margins. Hand signed by the artist in pencil lower right. From the Richter edition, dated in the plate lower right "1921". A total of 200 impressions were printed. Plate 3 of 7 from the "Bauernkrieg" cycle (Peasants' War cycle), which was produced by Käthe Kollwitz between 1903 and 1908. Platemark: 11 1/2" x 11 5/8", sheet: 28 5/8" x 22" The series "Bauernkrieg" was originally inspired by the 16th century peasants' revolt in Southern Germany, but in it Kollwitz strove to draw attention to the desperate plight of the 20th century German peasantry. In contrast to her earlier realistic style, Kollwitz here uses expressive distortion to lend the image an even more powerful subliminal emotional impact. |
