Sheet 25" x 19", image 23 3/4" x 17 3/4" Leopold Emile Aaron (1850-1905), who used the name Aaron was accused of paying bribes to the sum of 1.5 million Frances to deputies in connecton with the building of the Panama Canal, and on the instructions of Baron Reinach. After successfully evading the clutches of the police for several years, he was finally put on trial, but despite massive public protests he was pronounced not guilty; it was feared that further investigations would uncover even more scandals and corruption in government circles. |
